I really liked this book. Mercer Mayer isn't my favorite illustrator of all time, but there were some great pictures in here! I especially loved the scary creatures frozen in ice and the host of demons carrying away the youth. The story is easily readable, not too long, but good level of detail and interesting. My kids listened to it twice in a row.

I found this at a local bookshop. What a find! I'd read East years ago, after my sister recommended it, which is the East of the Sun& West of the Moon fairy tale. &also Sun&Moon, Ice and Snow. Mercer Mayer is known for his "Little Monster" books (some of which I loved as a child for the silly hidden jokes in the background of the images, like Little Monster's Mother Goose), but he illustrated a few fairy tales in a way that is reminiscent of Trina Schart Hyman's work, if a little more idealized-- hair and fabric blowing in the wind, dynamic layouts, incredible colors and smooth-curving lines, everything beautiful (except the trolls, which are a little frightening) and each page

I read this book so many times as a child that my copy is falling apart. I loved the illustrations so much that I still think of them from time to time. My rating is supremely biased in that I was read this when I was little and grew up with it, but I absolutely adore this book and just had to say so!

I didn't find this book, 'Shibumi and the Kite Maker' or Mercer's version of 'Beauty and the Beast' until later. I did grow up reading 'Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like' though. While the author has many popular books, these ones with their amazing illustrations are just so special.

The last traditional literature I have read is East of the Sun & West of the Moon. I believe that this story is a folktale. (I also found that this book can be a fairytale, too. Today, folk tales have already taken a written form. A fair tale, on the other hand, also takes its roots from oral tradition, but involve magical creatures such as dragons, ogres, witches, and unicorns.
