This book is absolutely fantastic. Let me tell you why.First, it's about theatre. Okay, I am a bit obsessed with theatre... it's like, if a novel's about theatre, it starts with a point/star plus for me :). W. Somerset Maugham had written novels that are far more interesting and thought provoking than this one. But this novel is not uninteresting and those who appreciate Maugham will find Theatre entertaining. Maugham's experience as a professional playwright and his intimate knowledge of the world of theatre is certainly utilized to great effect. There have been a number of Somerset Maugham's novels that I've really enjoyed. Books like The Razor's Edge, The Moon and Sixpence and The Painted Veil have made me such a fan that I read everything of Maugham's that I can find. However sometimes the magic seems to desert his writing and this is one of those times. This is the story of a very good actress and her career, her affairs and other relationships. It is well written but missing the spark that is present in a number of his other books.

He makes it all seem so effortless. The seemingly casual construction of a completely convincing plot, the apparent ease with which he understands and describes a self-absorbed woman's character, the engaging prose. Wonderful piece of work - I have gone straight out and bought Of Human Bondage as a result!
