One of my favorite books, and authors, of all time. Short stories from the author's early life in the former Rhodesia.

I read this by the beach mainly. These stories are wonderfully easy to get lost in. Some of the best.

The preface, written by the author herself, promises a straightforward exposure of (some of) the harsh sociological aspects in South Africa, mostly around racism. Yes, there are a couple of subtle references to that, to the white people's limitations in regarding local black people also as human beings, with their own range of sociological problematic and cultural horizons (and, hence, the 2nd star in my rating). But, overall, this series of short stories just cannot get past presenting Africans

I'm not thrilled so far ... I think I'm just not a fan of short stories ...

Excellent collection of short and longer stories by a very powerful writer, inspired by her childhood spent in Africa. Before this I had only read "The Fifth Child" by Doris Lessing, which left a strong impression on me, although in a creepy way let's say. But this book is very different and I enjoyed it much more. My favourite stories were "The Old Chief Mshlanga", "The Antheap", "Hunger" and a few others... But if I were to choose only one it would be "The Story of Two Dogs", for me the most
